“Barbarian” opens at night with a loud boom and a deluge. For what appears to be a classic horror film, things are going well so far. Keep your ponchos close by.
After nearly two hours, you will have witnessed practically every horror cliché cleverly toyed with, from doors slamming on their own to strange monsters with mommy issues and underground torture dungeons. The title itself is misleading.
Zach Cregger, a director and writer who is knowledgeable about movie cliches and has a subtle talent for social satire that is on par with Jordan Peele’s, makes his triumphant feature film debut with “Barbarian.” Before the dread returns, he will also manage to make you laugh out loud during brief moments of hilarity.
A young woman (Georgina Campbell) discovers a strange stranger (Bill Skarsgrd) living in her Airbnb-rented home on a rainy middle-of-the-night street in a half-ruined area of Detroit. “I don’t know what the protocol for all this is,” he tells her. Their awkward dance seems to hint at a small story of gender roles and microaggressions as they check booking receipts and offer to sleep on the couch. However, it will eventually turn into a horror movie with skulls with eyeballs gouged out and hair on fire.
Make no mistake: Cregger is joking around with us at every turn. Even the film’s setting is a slight of hand; a bombed-out section of Detroit with the Airbnb home in its centre was actually filmed in Bulgaria. Skarsgrd’s casting as the is-he-a-sweetie-or-not is coloured by his role as Pennywise in “It.”

Later, the appearance of Justin Long, an actor long identified with good-guy humour, who now portraying a slimy TV character on a new programme aptly titled “Chip off the Block,” casts even more doubt on the situation. Even when he is not promoting his own film, Cregger is nevertheless embracing Hollywood norms.
In a sea of damaged and deteriorating homes, the house stands out as the real star despite the excellent casting. It is tastefully decorated but generic. It features a horrifying room in the basement with a filthy bed, a bucket, and a camera. But there’s more: a spooky subterranean area beneath. As our heroes confront TWO horror movie-ready basements, you can practically hear Cregger laughing. One says, “You’re safe. Another said, “I don’t think I am,”
One recurring joke is that Campbell spends so much time attempting to get out of the house and then smashes her way right back in that more than one audience member at a recent showing pleaded with her to simply jump in her Jeep Cherokee and leave.
Redlining, misogyny, character redemption, gun accidents, and police wrongdoing are among the serious societal themes that have been explored throughout the film, elevating it above genre-gazing frivolity. Even though there might be a creature within the house, outside forces keep the monster there.
“Barbarian” is unmistakably of its time—complete with smartphone flashlights, real estate square footage listings, and internet house rental bookings—yet timeless, like an arm severed and wielded as a club. Even if it was predicted, prediction was impossible. Make a reservation for one night soon.
The 103-minute movie “Barbarian,” from 20th Century Studios, is rated R for “some severe violence and gore, disturbing themes, language throughout, and nudity.” Three out of four stars.
